Virtual Portfolio Review
Creating a single experience for students to submit their design portfolio for review by University staff.
IMD Portfolio submission website is a web application that allows high school students around the world to upload their portfolios and for the Carleton University staff to review them.
This was a 3 month-long project where we designed and built a web application that allowed high school students to upload their portfolios for a Carleton University additions
The team consisted of myself, and one developer.
My notes and comments will go here…
The challenge
The IMD program at Carleton University requested design a new portfolio submission web application that would bring combine all of the eaxperiance regarding the portfolio submission into one place and would allow students to:
Learn about portfolio requirements
Be able to contact the university
Submit their portfolio
Get their portfolio reviewed by the faculty staff
We had three target users:
High school students
Parents
Faculty staff that would be reviewing portfolios
Initial explorations & research
Based on Google analytics of the previous app we’ve learned that students liked to create an account partially upload the portfolio and leave. They would come back later to finish and submit their portfolio
Looking at the current flow
After looking at the portfolio resources it became clear that everything was scattered creating a disjointed experience causing users to feel unsure if they have everything that is needed to successfully submit their portfolios. Requirements were in three different places and submission website looked outdated and constantly caused problems.
I started by studying different use cases and flows.
.
New Users
New users should be able to create an account by providing their email, name, and a phone number.
-
Uploading the portfolio
Students are required to upload one PDF with their portfolio presentation, they can also provide multiple links to youtube and Vimeo in case they had videos.
The system should know what the user uploaded and if they missed something it should notify them.
It's also important to save user's progress since in 80% users would upload their resume partially.
Reassure the sure that their action was successful.
Portfolio Review
Faculty members would usually review the all of the submissions picking the most successful submissions.
The old design clearly looked outdated. The client requested to keep all elements as is but just refresh the UI.
The updated design allows users to sort and filter based on submission criteria.
Also, user is able to view and rate each portfolio.
What is next?
The redesign was very successful, we saw a 20% increase in the number of students that applied to the program by submitting their portfolios.
We want to continue improving the experience and hopefully adding email notifications that would remind students of the submission deadline.
